About Down Syndrome Galway
Down Syndrome Galway’s mission is to create opportunities for social inclusion, personal development, and community integration for our members at every stage of life.
At Down Syndrome Galway, we put the person with Down syndrome at the centre of everything we do.
We are a family-led organisation, not a service provider, and we are not affiliated with the HSE. We receive no government funding—everything we achieve is made possible by the dedication of our families, volunteers, and generous supporters.
What We Do
Down Syndrome Galway (DSG) is a family-run branch supporting people with Down syndrome and their families across Galway city and county. Since 1985, we have been a vital part of the community, supporting over 300 members, from newborns to adults.
We provide a range of programs and supports that grow with our members, from early childhood through to adulthood.
Early Years (0–3 Years)
The early years can be overwhelming, but connecting with families who understand your journey can make all the difference.
We offer:
- Baby & Toddler Coffee Mornings – Friendly first meet-ups that often lead to lifelong friendships
- Early Communication Support – Programs like Babbling Books, Baby Bonding, and Colourstrings to nurture early speech and language development
Children & Teens (3–18 Years)
As children grow, we offer continued support to families and schools through every educational stage—Montessori, primary, and post-primary.
Our supports include:
- Numicon – A visual, hands-on approach to developing numeracy.
- Lámh – A manual sign system that supports communication.
- Therapy Support – We work to fund speech & language therapy and occupational therapy where public services fall short.
Key programs include:
- See & Learn – A structured program to support speech, language, and literacy.
- Support from a Speech & Language Therapist and Speech & Language Assistant.
- Employment Support – Our Employment Specialist helps prepare young people and adults for meaningful work opportunities.
Social & Recreational Activities
We believe in the power of friendship, fun, and community. We offer a variety of social and recreational events throughout the year, such as:
- Yoga, Zumba, Dance, Movie Nights, and Discos.
- Seasonal events – including Halloween, Christmas, and Easter celebrations.
- Summer Camps – fun and inclusive (subject to funding).
- Creative and educational classes – such as Sensory Play with ARTROOM109 and Phonics with Robot Reg.
How You Can Help
Down Syndrome Galway relies entirely on fundraising and the generosity of volunteers. Your support allows us to continue delivering vital programs and services to our members.
Whether through donations, volunteering, or fundraising events, every contribution makes a real difference.
Get involved today – together we can build a more inclusive future.
